A Scientific Trinity (Coelacanth)

Project type

Multimedia Sculpture

Date

2025

In our modern age of information, the scientific process is widely understood within three major characteristics. Reason, Experience and Observation.
When a new species is discovered-or in the Coelacanth's case, rediscovered-we first observe it in its natural habitat. Next, we examine a specimen through dissection to understand its anatomy. Finally, we turn to the fossil record to place the species within evolutionary history.
I was inspired by the resurrection of this ancient fish and connected it to enduring religious symbols. The symbol of three circling fish is often associated with the Christian Holy Trinity. I reinterpret that symbol as a representation of what I see as the sacred trinity of the modern information era. In this framework, reason is representative of dissection, experience by fossils, and observation by the living specimen.
By merging science with symbolism, I aim to highlight how knowledge is continuously being rediscovered and redefined, much like the Coelacanth itself. A bridge between the past and present providing a glimpse into ancient mysteries and modern understanding.
