Guiding Light

Guiding light is a tribute to the light house as both a monumental structure and a commoditized object. The light house as an image is something commonly seen in souvenir shops and coastal themed merchandise. I feel that the true beauty of the light house is often lost. When creating this piece, I thought about the light house's purpose and capacity for storytelling.

Light houses are structures built to help generations of sailors pass safely through torturous waters. The light is something alluring that warns of danger. To be successful in its purpose, it must be viewed from a distance. When creating this piece, I wanted to eliminate that distance through the asymmetrical construction and weathered look I wanted to give it a whimsical, almost storybook like appearance. In the presentation of this piece, I wish to invite viewers to create their own stories about this light house. Like a doll house which allows tactile play I want this to be an artwork that encourages the mind to imagine.
