Guiding Light

Guiding Light is a tribute to the lighthouse as both a monumental structure and a commoditized object. The lighthouse as an image is commonly seen in souvenir shops and coastal-themed merchandise. I feel that the true beauty of the lighthouse is often lost. When creating this piece, I thought about the lighthouse’s purpose and capacity for storytelling.
Lighthouses are structures built to help generations of sailors safely pass through treacherous waters. The light is an alluring presence that also warns of danger. To be successful in its purpose, it must be viewed from a distance. In the presentation of this piece, I wish to invite viewers to create their own stories about this lighthouse. Like a dollhouse that allows tactile play, I want this to be an artwork that encourages the imagination.
